Abstract

This study examined the influence of socio-cultural factors on women’s participation in adult literacy education in Oyo State, Nigeria. This study was a descriptive survey research.  Three hundred and fifty-two (352) women were sampled across three (3) senatorial districts in Oyo state using a simple random sampling technique. A researcher’s designed questionnaire taged Literacy and Women Participation (LWPI) was used for data collection with a reliability coefficient of 0.79 Simple percentage was used to analyse the socio-cultural factors and the extent of participation of women in adult literacy programme. Descriptive statistics of percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the hypothesis was tested using multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that women in Oyo State sometimes participate in adult literacy education. Religions, languages and educational levels significantly influenced women’s participation in adult literacy education. Thus, it was recommended that, religious organisations should intensify efforts in establishing literacy education centres where women who are not literate will be able to enroll in the centres that are very close to them.
