TEACHING AND PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES OF LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN NIGERIA DURING COVID-19 ERA

Abstract

Physical contact between the teacher and the students in teaching and learning forum is of uttermost importance in achieving educational objectives because non-verbal communication cues play critical roles in shaping the comprehension horizon of the learners while in the conventional classroom situation. Teaching strategies such as demonstration, gesticulation, pointing accompanied with voice modulation go a long way in imparting knowledge in the learners most especially in foreign language learning programme. However, Corona virus that emerged from China and ravaged the entire world necessitated a change in teaching and learning mode in almost all continents of the world. Educational systems of the world almost went into comatose due to this pandemic and nations of the world advanced new approach to lesson delivery at all levels of the educational systems including higher education because learning has to continue unhindered. Some of the innovations brought into teaching and learning included whasapp, video conferencing, skypes, webinar etc. Some of these pedagogical approaches and curriculum innovation have positive impact on teaching and learning outcomes in French language as a foreign language where they were adopted. This paper however looked into the evaluation of curriculum innovation, pedagogical approaches and prospects of adopting Elearning during Covid-19 era in Nigeria with particular emphasis on teaching of French language as a foreign language in Nigeria. Conclusion was drawn and recommendations made on how to enhance the use of e-learning to harness educational potentials of learners in foreign language learning programme
